New research by disability@work traces UK disability-related labour market inequality during the pandemic

As part of an ESRC funded research project within the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research (WISERD), Professor Melanie Jones documents higher COVID19-related work-related health and economic risks for disabled workers before the pandemic. However, relatively limited change in disability inequality, as measured using established indicators of the disability employment and pay gaps, is observed during the pandemic. The exception to this is a more dramatic increase in being temporarily away from work among disabled workers, suggesting disproportionate use of the government furlough scheme. The implications of this for future disability inequality need to be monitored.
