The NHS is shining an increasing spotlight on the issue of the employment of disabled people, from the point of view of both increasing the number of disabled employees and also improving disabled employees’ experiences of work. A recent NHS Employers event in Birmingham focused specifically on this issue.
Kim Hoque addressed the event 2019, introducing the main recommendations within the Ahead of the Arc report, co-authored by disability@work and Disability Rights UK. He also discussed the efforts disability@work have undertaken, in collaboration with Lisa Cameron MP and the All Party Parliamentary Group for Disability, to seek the incorporation of the report’s recommendations into government policy. Following the event, disability@work met with the leads for the NHS’s Workforce Disability Equality Standard (WDES) which uses a range of measures to monitor the experience of disabled employees in the NHS, to discuss the potential for future collaboration.
