APPG Disability ‘Where are disabled people in the Industrial Strategy Green Paper?’

The All Party Parliamentary Group for Disability held its AGM at Portcullis House on July 13th. At the meeting attended by parliamentarians and delegates from a range of disability organisations, Kim Hoque introduced the APPG’s report ‘Ahead of the Arc: A Contribution to Halving the Disability Employment Gap’. He emphasized the report’s key recommendations regarding disabled people’s entrepreneurship and self-employment and the role public sector procurement might play in improving the employment position of disabled people. He also highlighted the limitations of Disability Confident in overcoming the barriers disabled people face in the workplace. Senior BEIS civil servant Alex Williams faced questioning from Philip Connolly on the omission of disabled people from the Government’s Industrial Strategy Green Paper. He acknowledged that disability, and equality issues more widely, would need to be addressed when it is published later this year.
